The history of Darjeeling is closely linked with that of Sikkim, Nepal and Bhutan. In the early 18th century, the Himalayan kingdom of Sikkim was founded in the northern foothills of the Himalayas. Nepal and Bhutan, two of Sikkim’s neighboring countries, were also established around this time. Darjeeling was a part of Sikkim until the British annexed it in the mid 19th century.
The British first began to take an interest in the Darjeeling area in the early 19th century, when they established a trading post in the town of Siliguri. In 1817, the British East India Company sent a mission to Nepal to establish friendly relations with the Nepalese government. The mission was led by George Bogle, who was accompanied by a young doctor named Archibald Campbell.
While in Nepal, Bogle and Campbell heard rumors of a beautiful mountain kingdom called Sikkim, which was said to be located in the foothills of the Himalayas. Intrigued by these stories, the pair decided to try and reach Sikkim. However, their attempt was unsuccessful, and they were forced to turn back when they reached the border between Nepal and Sikkim.
Despite this setback, the British East India Company continued to be interested in the region and in 1828, they sent another mission to Nepal, this time led by Captain W.S. Lindsay. Lindsay was able to reach Sikkim and meet with the Sikkimese ruler, Maharaja Narbu Narsingh.
During his time in Sikkim, Lindsay became friends with the Maharaja and his son, Tashi Namgyal. Lindsay was also able to explore the Darjeeling area and he was impressed by its natural beauty. On his return to Calcutta, Lindsay wrote a report in which he recommended that the British East India Company should annex Darjeeling.
In 1835, the British East India Company finally annexed Darjeeling, which became a part of the British Raj. The British developed Darjeeling as a hill station and it soon became a popular place for Europeans to escape the heat of the plains. Darjeeling’s popularity increased even further when it was linked to Calcutta by rail in 1881.
